Kansas WBGT rules for high school sports.

Kansas requires every school to maintain a WBGT-based heat-modification policy. PracticeCast previews KSHSAA's current recommended model; confirm the policy your school adopted.

What coaches need to know

  • Up to 79.9°F WBGT: normal activity with three 3-minute breaks each hour.
  • 80.0–84.6°F: three 4-minute breaks and rapid cooling prepared.
  • 84.7–87.7°F: maximum 2-hour activity, four breaks each hour, football equipment limits, and competition alterations.
  • 87.8–89.7°F: delay or reschedule; if activity occurs, maximum 1 hour, 20 minutes of rest, and no football equipment or conditioning.
  • 89.8°F and above: no outdoor activity.
  • The KSHSAA chart is a recommended model; use the WBGT-based policy adopted by your school.

Recommended Practice and Competition Modification Policy

Each school must have a WBGT-based activity-modification policy. This is KSHSAA's recommended model; schools may use their own compliant policy. Readings are taken at the activity site when ambient temperature is at least 80°F. KSHSAA provides a temperature-and-humidity estimate chart when no monitor is available.
