Michigan heat rules for high school sports.
Michigan publishes a heat-index model policy that is mandatory for MHSAA tournaments but not universally mandated for regular-season school activity. Confirm your school's adoption.
What coaches need to know
- The model requires activity-site temperature and humidity checks and written records.
- Below 95°F heat index: ample water, optional 10-minute breaks every 30 minutes, cooling towels, and monitoring.
- 95–99°F: reduce activity, consider postponing, remove idle contact equipment, and recheck every 30 minutes.
- 100–104°F: mandatory breaks, alter uniforms, postpone, and suspend activity requiring protective equipment.
- 105°F and above: stop outdoor activity and indoor activity without air conditioning.
Model Policy for Managing Heat & Humidity
The model policy calls for temperature and humidity readings at the activity site 30 minutes before and 60 minutes after activity begins, with written records. It is mandatory for MHSAA tournament managers but is a model, not a universal regular-season mandate.
